Personalized Mathematics Professional Development for Teachers

Create a classroom environment where students find the joy in mathematics!

Math Workshop is a model for instruction to support all learners in the mathematics classroom. Participants in Jennifer's professional development sessions engage in the Math Workshop model of instruction, reflect on how the structures and learning environment leverage increased engagement for all students, and create a plan to implement Math Workshop in the classroom.

Full-Day Sessions:

In a full-day session, participants will build an understanding of what Math Workshop is and how to get started. Exploration of the three structures of Math Workshop will allow participants to see the model through the lens of teacher and student. Activities to support differentiation will be shared, and connections will be made to existing curriculum and school/district goals. These sessions can be grade band specific or open to all staff.

Follow Up Sessions:

Follow up sessions are offered to support teachers who have implemented a Math Workshop model and would benefit from time to reflect on and refine practices. These sessions will be constructed around the individual needs of the participants.

Half-Day Sessions:

In a half-day session, participants will build an understanding of what Math Workshop is and what it is not. Time will be spent reflecting on current practices and how to integrate components of the Math Workshop model with the existing curriculum and instructional practices. This session is best used as an introduction to Math Workshop with follow up PD scheduled soon after.

Math Content Sessions:

Additional professional development sessions are offered on math content for schools and/or districts that have explored a Math Workshop model and find that teachers could benefit from content specific information. These PD sessions will be grounded in a Math Workshop approach. However, the Math Workshop session is not a prerequisite to these courses.

Professional development opportunities are available in-person or virtual.

Additional Professional Development and Coaching opportunities include:

  • Mathematics Instructional Walk-Throughs: We visit classrooms and discuss the connections to math workshop while learning as a group and developing goals for implementation.
  • Mathematics Instructional Materials Connection Sessions: We spend time with your current curriculum or textbook and determine the connections within a math workshop model.
  • Mathematics School Improvement Coaching: We work together to identify the current state and desired state of your school’s mathematics instruction and develop a one-year, three-year, and five-year plan for growth.

Working with Jennifer is a transformative experience! She tailors her sessions to meet teachers' needs in order to deeply explore the components of math workshop. Jennifer enthusiastically models math workshop as she facilitates conversations and engages teachers through hands-on experiences. She understands the complexity of being a teacher. As a result, teachers leave feeling valued, energized, and ready to take the resources and tools provided back to their classrooms.

King George County Schools was pleased to provide customized webinars to our K-6 teachers that focused on the best practices outlined in the book, "Math Workshop" by Jennifer Lempp.  We needed a model for professional development that would be easily accessible to our teachers meeting in professional learning groups, and Ms. Lempp provided targeted, effective videos that were specific and relevant to our teaching and learning environment.  The engaging videos allowed for learning groups to  interact with the text of the book and with each other to gain a deeper understanding of the structures for math workshops.  Our teachers enjoyed the flexibility of accessing the recorded webinar on their own time when needed.  Overall, the recorded video webinars have enabled our teachers to expand their toolbox for math instruction using the math workshop framework.  We are confident that this investment in our teachers' learning will have positive outcomes for the math learning of our students.

Our district is incredibly lucky to partner with Jennifer Lempp as an educational consultant. Through our collaboration with Ms. Lempp, our district is forming a common definition of the math workshop model. From the moment I saw Jennifer present, I couldn’t wait to get her in front of our elementary staff. Jennifer is a joy to work with. She is responsive, collaborative, and highly professional. After our very first session, teachers commented, “She was realistic and positive, while not asking for unrealistic changes… her suggestions were easily digested and she was wonderful overall,” and “...her empathy for what happens in many math classes was appreciated. Strategies will be tried and tested.” Our elementary teachers described her as engaging, refreshing, genuine, knowledgeable, clear, interesting, and informative. It is clear that Jennifer is always a teacher at heart, and her session reflected this. We are looking forward to evolving math workshop over time, through our collaboration and guidance from Jennifer.
